Sarah Elizabeth Sloan

SARAH ELIZABETH CLINE SLOAN wife of DR. ELIAS SLOAN Sarah Elizabeth Cline Sloan, 86, born at Archer’s Fork on March 17, 1848, daughter of Reuben Fleming and Diana Ellis Cady Cline who were early pioneer settlers in Independence Township, Washington County, Ohio. She spent her childhood there and after completing her education taught school for a number of years in Newport. She married on March 21, 1872 to Dr. Elias Sloan, then a young doctor at Newport. They established their home there going to housekeeping in the Adkins home. Dr. Sloan continued his practice at Newport for several years. He then moved to Williamstown, West Virginia where the family resided until their move to Marietta. For many years Dr. and Mrs. Sloan lived on Fourth Street opposite Marietta College. When the former gave up his practice, they built a home at Rathbone Place and there Dr. Sloan passed away on May 23, 1917.

Dr. George S. Smith

DR. GEORGE S. SMITH Dr. George Smith was a native of Belmont County, Ohio. He came to Newport in 1844 and settled about two miles north of the village. He practices his profession in connection with horticulture until the time that St. Mary’s was made the county seat of Pleasants County (about 1850). He then removed to St. Marys. In 1854 he returned to his old location until 1858 when he removed to Missouri. He later practiced in Illinois.

Dr. John E. Rupert with his wife, Thelma Boyer Rupert came into the Ohio Valley area in 1951 and began his medical practice in St. Marys, West Virginia.

DR. DAVID L. WIRTZ Dr. Wirtz was born March 6, 1950 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He now resides at 115 Woodcrest Drive, Marietta, Ohio. His hobbies are golf and woodcarving. He is a graduate of Mount Healthy High School in Cincinnati and a graduate of Ohio State University in 1972 with a degree in B. S. Microbiology, Ohio State Medical Society and the American College of Physicians. He received his internship at Miami Valley Hospital at Dayton, Ohio. He is a member of the Washington County Medical society, Ohio State Medical Society and The American College of Physicians. He started his practice in Newport in 1985. He has been the plant doctor for Ormet Corporation at Hannibal, Ohio since 1989. His assistants are Mrs. Jerry (Nancy) Holpp and her daughter, Mrs. James (Cheryl) West.
