March 21, 2011:  We are sad to report the passing of Kitty Wren.  Our condolences to her family and friends.  See the Obituary page for details.  We ask our visitors to submit obituaries that will be of interest to those with connections to Newport and the surrounding area.  

March 16, 2011:  We've added an additional list of postmasters courtesy of Eileen Thomas.  We've also added the story of William V. Torner's work ferrying mail across the Ohio River on a skiff.  The skiff is currently at the Morgan County Historical Society.  Go to the the "Newport Post Office" history page and scroll down to the bottom of the page to read this fascinating story and to view the skiff in action during the 1937 flood and as it looks today. 

February 15, 2011:  A poem read at the funeral of Captain Mary Becker Greene has been added to her page.  Go to "River History" and click on "Captain Mary."

February 13, 2011:  We've added the genealogy of the Christian Thomas family, dating to the 1600s, which was compiled by Eileen Thomas.  Click on "Thomas Genealogy" link on the "Genealogy" page.

  Knowing that many of our visitors live great distances from Newport and Washington County, Susy Wetz and Eileen Thomas have photographed markers in the Newport Cemetery and other small cemeteries in Washington County.

June 26, 2010:  Frequently, we receive questions regarding genealogy; we know that it's important for our visitors to be in touch with each other.  We have, therefore, set up a page to facilitate contacts between genealogy researchers and visitors to our site.  Our new page is entitled "Genealogy Researchers."

June 26, 2009: 
William V. Torner, the grandson of William V. and Jennie Greene Torner,
has recorded his memoir of WWII which can be found under "Military Service."  William's working years were spent on inland waterways, and his experience was invaluable to the Navy Seabees.

April 10, 2009:   Imagine
our excitement to learn that the skiff used by William V. Torner to
transport mail in the 1930s is in the care of the Morgan County
Historical Society.  We are grateful to R. Quincy Robe, Trustee, and to
William for the amazing saga of the sixteen footer.  You will find this
on the "Memories" page.

September 17, 2008:  Ellen Battelle Dietrick was the daughter of Gordon Battelle, who was the son of Ebenezer and Mary Greene Battelle and the grandson of pioneers John and Mary Greene.  She was a respected and articulate voice for women's suffrage.  We have posted several obituaries that were a fine tribute to her many accomplishments.  Scroll down the the "Battelle Monument" and click on Ellen Battelle Dietrick.

Susy Wetz has provided us with photos of small cemeteries that are now in the Wayne National Forest.  She has also supplied names and dates from the markers.  This is a valuable resource for anyone searching for ancestors' grave sites.  Scroll down to "Cemeteries."  We continue to update this page, and much of the information has been sent to us by Eileen Thomas.
